The key thing to understand is that a boiler losing pressure once is often nothing to worry about. A boiler that keeps losing pressure repeatedly is telling you something, and repeatedly topping it up without investigating the cause is not the solution.

What Is Boiler Pressure and What Should It Be?
Boiler pressure is the pressure of the water inside your sealed central heating circuit. Unlike your mains water supply, the water in a central heating system is contained in a closed loop. The pressure within that loop needs to stay within a certain range for your boiler to operate safely and efficiently.
For most modern combi boilers and system boilers, including popular models from Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi and Ideal, the correct pressure when the system is cold should sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. This is the ideal boiler pressure for the majority of UK homes.
When the heating is running and the water has warmed up, pressure will naturally rise. A healthy system typically reads between 1.5 and 2.0 bar when the heating is on. This is normal and expected.
As a general rule:
- Below 1.0 bar: the system is too low and the boiler may lock out
- 1.0 to 1.5 bar: correct when cold
- 1.5 to 2.0 bar: correct when heating is running
- Above 2.5 bar: pressure is too high and needs attention
- Above 3.0 bar: the pressure relief valve may operate to release excess pressure

How to Repressurise Your Boiler
If your pressure has dropped below 1.0 bar and you are confident the drop was caused by a recent bleed rather than an ongoing fault, here is how to top it up safely:
- Switch the boiler off and allow it to cool
- Locate the filling loop beneath or beside the boiler
- Slowly open the valve or valves until the gauge reads between 1.0 and 1.5 bar
- Close the valves firmly
- Switch the boiler back on and press reset if required
- Monitor the pressure over the next few days
Top tip
Most systems only need topping up once or twice a year, often after bleeding radiators. If you are topping up your boiler more frequently than this, stop and call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Repeatedly repressurising without finding the cause can mask a more serious underlying fault and in some cases make the eventual repair more complex.
What to Do if Your Boiler Pressure is Too High
If your pressure gauge is reading above 2.5 bar, do not ignore it. High boiler pressure puts unnecessary strain on seals, valves and pipework and can cause the pressure relief valve to operate, discharging water from the overflow pipe outside.
To reduce high pressure, bleed a radiator slowly until the gauge drops back to between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. If pressure keeps rising again after reducing it, call a Gas Safe registered engineer as this usually points to a fault with the filling loop or expansion vessel.
How to Improve Long-Term Boiler Pressure Stability
The most effective thing you can do to maintain stable boiler pressure over the long term is to have your boiler serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. During a service, the engineer will check the expansion vessel, pressure relief valve, seals and all connections throughout the system, catching small faults before they develop into pressure-related problems.
If your boiler has been repeatedly losing pressure and you have been putting off investigating the cause, now is the time to act. The longer a slow leak or failing component goes unaddressed, the more likely it is to cause additional damage to surrounding components.
The Most Common Reasons a Boiler Keeps Losing Pressure
1. A Leak Somewhere in the System
The most common reason a boiler keeps losing pressure is a leak. The frustrating thing about central heating leaks is that they are not always obvious. Water can escape slowly from a joint, valve or section of pipework hidden behind a wall, under floorboards or inside the boiler casing itself, long before any visible sign appears on the surface.
Look carefully around all radiator valves, pipe joints, and beneath the boiler itself for any signs of moisture, rust marks, white limescale deposits or peeling paint and wallpaper near pipe runs. If you find evidence of a leak, do not continue topping up the system, call a Gas Safe engineer to locate and resolve it properly.
2. A Faulty Pressure Relief Valve
The pressure relief valve is a safety device designed to release water if the system pressure climbs too high. Over time these valves can develop a fault and start to release water even when pressure is at a normal level.
A clear sign of a faulty pressure relief valve is water dripping or discharging from the overflow pipe, which is usually a plastic pipe exiting through an outside wall. If you notice water coming from this pipe regularly, call a Gas Safe engineer straight away rather than topping up the boiler and hoping for the best.
3. A Failing Expansion Vessel
Inside your boiler sits a component called the expansion vessel. Its job is to absorb the natural increase in water volume that occurs when the central heating heats up, preventing pressure from rising excessively.
When the rubber diaphragm inside the expansion vessel fails, it can no longer do this job. A telltale sign is pressure that rises quite quickly when the heating comes on and then drops back down again once it turns off. This is different from a straight pressure drop and is a reliable indicator that the expansion vessel needs attention.
4. Radiators That Have Recently Been Bled
Bleeding radiators releases trapped air from the system, and when air escapes, a small amount of pressure is lost with it. If your pressure dropped after you bled a radiator, this is entirely normal. Top the pressure back up to between 1.0 and 1.5 bar via the filling loop and monitor it over the next few days. If it holds steady, the bleeding was the cause and no further action is needed.
5. A Filling Loop Left Partially Open
The filling loop is the mechanism used to add water to the system when repressurising. On Worcester Bosch boilers this is often a built-in keyway valve, while many other makes including Ideal use an external braided hose with valves at each end.

If you have a Worcester Bosch or Ideal boiler that keeps losing pressure, check the filling loop first. On many Worcester models the filling loop is a built-in keyway valve, while Ideal boilers often have an external braided hose. A filling loop that has not been fully closed after the last top-up is one of the most common causes of slowly creeping pressure changes and is one of the first things we check on any pressure call-out.
If the filling loop valves are not fully closed after topping up, water from the mains can slowly seep into the system, causing pressure to fluctuate. This can cause pressure to creep up rather than drop, before the pressure relief valve eventually releases the excess.
Why Annual Boiler Servicing Prevents Pressure Problems
Many boiler pressure faults develop slowly and are only discovered when the boiler locks out or the homeowner notices the gauge reading is wrong. An annual service carried out by a Gas Safe registered heating engineer in Essex will pick up expansion vessel issues, faulty relief valves and developing leaks before they become an emergency.
